About Us
The Military Workshop was established in 1997 by Brett
Williams. Brett migrated to Australia after serving in the Royal Hong Kong
Police for almost 20 years. He and his family left Hong Kong prior to the
handover to China. Brett's father served in the British Army and he has
always had an interest in military and historical matters. He grew up
visiting various Regimental and Military Museums and like many kids played
with Airfix and Timpo plastic soldiers (which he still has). He is an
incredibly poor modeller (he did buy a 1/72 Corsair in 1999 that was on
special but it is unlikely it will ever be completed).
Brett made
contact with Brett Rowe (B2) upon arrival. B2 had a business called
Australian Military Models and was producing resin Australian figure kits.
Some of these figure kits were subsequently continued under The Military
Workshop name.
Brett Rowe is a long time modeller with an interest
in WWII armour. One of his greatest memories as a child was visiting the
Airfix factory in England. Like most modellers he has a large collection of
model kits in his "bunker". He has painted a lot of Australian figure kits
for customers. In more recent years he has diversified into Roman and
American Civil War figures. His current modelling wish is the Roman Bireme by
Andrea. B2 previously served as a Gunner in the Artillery.
In the
first year of business some Australian figure kits were produced as well as a
couple of prints and a diecast model of the Titanic (which was also sold in
UK under the Gilbow brand name). In November 1998 The Military Workshop
became a shop located in Mt Gravatt on the south side of Brisbane. The
business specialised in figure kits and military prints.
In 2001
the shop re-located to Stafford about [blank] km north of Brisbane City
Centre. The move was combined with the re-location of Wargames Warehouse and
one large premises was split into two. Wargames Warehouse is operated by
Stuart Hold (also ex-Artillery) and he has the largest stock and variety of
wargaming figures in Australia.
Since 2001 the shop has continued
to expand the variety of products which now include armour kits, modelling
magazines and books, diecast, and collectable action figures. Prints also
continue to be published.
In July 2004 the business opened a new
shop in Enogerra. This shop is located next to SAS Equipment which deals in
combat gear such as backpacks, sleeping bags etc.
Whilst many product's are
duplicated in both shops the man difference will be that the Stafford shop is
the modeller's shop and the Enogerra shop will have the majority of the
prints.
