Brett's Useless Snippets'
Description
This section will be where I post some totally useless but possbly interesting snippets of this n that. Will include thoughts on movies and TV shows and some tales from the shop. Will avoid politics and sex, drugs and rock n roll.
Regarding movies and TV I am a Zulu, Saving Private Ryan type of guy (you never would have guessed !). For TV think comedy such as Blackbooks, Blackadder, 30 Rock and Boston Legal and British crime such as Rebus, Taggart and anything by Lynda La Plante such as Trial and Retribution. Loved the Wire and highly recommend it. Was a fan of Criminal Minds but switched off as started to find the stiory lines a bit too much. Enjoy NCIS as like the cast (McCallum has aged well).
24 OCT 11 Photo, using infra red, from helicopter over tent campers outside St Paul's Cathedral reveals 90% of the tents are empty at night !. Meanwhile St Paul's losing significant money every day and closed for the first time since WWII.
24 OCT 11 Watched Celebrity Apprentice. Great mixture of personalities and hate to admit I am hooked. Was a car wash challenge and the guys team lost. A car from the owner of Aussiebum was going to pay $5,000 to the guys but they kept him waiting so he drove off to the girls team where he offered to pay $50,000 for Pauline Hanson to wash his car in a singlet and pair of their undies. Deni Hines got $10,000 out of him to sing the national anthem. The girls won because of that one car. I predict Warwick Capper (lazy) and Max Marxton (anything less than $1,000 not good enough for him and would rather not wash the car even though going to charity) to be the first to go and Shane Crawford or Justin Coleman to be the top guys. Polly from the Block to go first. Hines a snob about Polly and not doing herself any favours. Jacinta Campbell (never gave up) and Lisa Curry (hardly shown in this episode) to be the top two.
24 OCT 11 Volunteered by my wife to go and see the Queen. Saw her hat !!! Made up for it with a tapas and sangria lunch.
22OCT 11 Notice in Coalition HQ in Afghanistan.
Sadam Hussein Tick, Osama Bin Ladin Tick, Ghadaffi Tick, Justin Bieber ....
5 OCT 11 Finally ! The Australian reports VIC Police have confirmed they are investigating the credit card usage of Craig Thompson MP when he was a Union rep. Then there are the NSW investigations into Union President Mike Williamson. The lawyers are going to love these cases. I guess Union members will get slugged a second time with very high legal costs to defend both of them.
4 OCT 11 Seems there are discussions to make a "At home with David Cameron" along the lines of "At home with Julia". I am looking forward to At home with Berlusconi !
24 SEP 11 Warriors beat Melbourne. I guess that means many Aussies will be supporting a NZ team in the finals !.
23 SEP 11 Caught interview of latest Congressional Medal of Honour winner Dakota Meyer on Letterman. Only 21 in 2009 when personally rescued 12 injured and covered 24 others during a six hour battle with Taliban. When asked by White House if President could do anything for him he said he would not mind having a beer with him. Googling CMOH winners is interesting especially the ACW where they gave out so many (but not to the South !) they asked some to return them years later.
23 SEP 11 Unfortunately the Broncos lost to Manly the team everybody seems not to like. Don't follow AFL so no comment there (other than what a weird game !).
20 SEP 11 Watched the Roast of Charlie Sheen. Roasters included Mike Tyson and William Shatner (looks great at 80 even if had some work done) and others not so well known. This is a cable show in USA and the jokes were very strong to say the least. Laugh out loud especially some targetted at Tyson. Will have to see if I can find previous Roasts of Shatner and Pamela Anderson. Charlie only going to get $125 million from 2 1/2 men which explains him using the term "Winning".
19 SEP 10 Based on a tip from a like-minded customer popped down to JB Hi Fi to look for the movie The Charge of the Light Brigade (60's version). Not in stock but ordered it from another store for $13.99.
Noticed Borders CD sale. $10 all CD's or 4 for $30. Got $230 worth for $60. Thought I had done well until teenage daughter told me nobody pays for music anymore ! Regret buying Twilight CD for her.
Was absent for a while !
20 AUG 10 Lots of political ads in the papers today !!!. The Australian and The Courier Mail endorse the Liberals.
20 AUG 10 Papers report passing of Piper Bill Millin who played his bagpipes during D Day landings and was featured in movie The Longest Day. French are raising funds to erect a statue of him at Sword Beach.
18 AUG 10 Vietnam Veterans Day. Best wishes to all who served and their families. Press/radio seems in recent week to be mainly talking about Long Tan but let us not forget all the veterans and the over 500 who died.
Tonight new series Spartacus Blood and Sand starts on TV.
17 AUG 10 Cheap Tuesday so went to see The Ghost Writer with Pierce Brosnan and Ewan Macgregor. Ewan has to ghost write the autobiography of ex British PM Brosnan who is having problems over prosecution for war crimes (ie. allowing rendition). Political conspiracy drama with interesting plot. Bad ending. Saw the whole Johnnie Walker ad and even longer than I thought.
16 AUG 10 Doing a picture frame for relative of a WWII Italian veteran. He has three medals for the axis and three for the allies ! Had an interesting war as Italy changed sides in OCT 1943. Not many know that many Italian soldiers were massacred by the Germans.
12 AUG 10 - Noted one of my regulars has car registration CMC 01 (ie Crime and Misconduct Commission). If I was him I would upgrade car to a white sedan of the type normally used by the Govt. Would save time at police road checks ! Note if you are a Qld cop reading this the owner is a elderly veteran and as law abiding as they come.
12 AUG 10 - Driving towards shop and saw a person putting up Vote Greens signs on wall next to my shop (facing customers as they walk in). Approached him to ask if landlord knew about it and found he was the landlord. Commented that my customer base probably not that keen on the Greens. He did put sign up. Please note nothing to do with me. Where is a graffiti artist when you need one ?
11 AUG 10 - Saw the first two episodes of "Pillars of the Earth" based on a book by Ken Follet. Book is a family favourite. 1200 AD Britain and story involves intrigue as people try to claim the throne, an earldome and build a cathedral. Good cast with Donald Sutherland, Ian McShane as the evil Bishop (Deadwood), Rufus Sewell and Mathew Macfadyen (from Spooks and the Sherriff in Robin Hood). Has me hooked and can't wait to see the rest of the series.
10 AUG 10 - Shop visitor enquired about mounting 4 "bought" medals. British National service, Cold War medal (2nd version I have seen) Arabian service and a Corps "medal' which has ribbon close to colour of VC. First issue is I do not stock ribbon for any of those so hard to mount. Seemed to want to wear them as a set and advised against it as likely to cause comment by others. Generally not in favour of the "bought" medals, especially when worn with real medals.
31 JULY 10 - Saw the movie Centurion. Relatively unknown cast (Fessbender was in Inglorious Bastards and the main female is a former Bond girl - there is also a Scarlet Johannsen lookalike who is better looking than the original).
AD 117 the 9th Legion marches into Scotland and ends up as a chase movie. Good action movie and very graphic violence with lots of close up throat cuttings and head removals. One scene has to have one of the worst "betrayals" by mate upon mate (ouch !). Good scenery and aerial shots.
Movie preceeded by a very long and well done Johnnie Walker whiskey add featuring Robert Carlisle.
25 JULY 10 - After seeing last two episodes of "30 Seconds" on TV bought the Australian series from ABC Shop. 6 episodes discounted to $10 but usually $29. Had not heard of it before but really enjoyed it and worth a look. Good Aussie cast (Mr and Mrs Carl Williams from Underbelly series one and George Freeman from Underbelly series 2 and 3 and other familiar faces). Amusing look at an advertising agency. The one where they are trying to win a Cannes award is a classic. Would have paid $29.
